Cognac Language | A Journey Through Time and Flavo | Discoveries

o you really know what VS, VSOP, XO and XXO mean?

VS, VSOP, XO, XXO…These seemingly simple letters quietly reveal the story of time behind every Cognac.

They are not random abbreviations, but a true “language” of ageing and flavour:

  • VS (Very Special): Aged for at least 2 years; light, vibrant and direct in style.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Aged for at least 4 years; showing a mellow golden amber hue.
  • XO (Extra Old): Aged for at least 10 years; deeper in colour, with richer layers of dried fruits and spice.
  • XXO (Extra Extra Old): Aged for at least 14 years; often displaying a deep reddish-brown to dark amber colour, with aromas that evolve beyond dried fruits and wood into subtle notes of aged leather and spice, a palate that unfolds in layers, and a long, lingering finish.

Interestingly, all of these terms are in English. Back in the 19th century, Cognac was widely exported to the United Kingdom and the United States. To communicate with connoisseurs across the world, English became the most natural choice.

To this day, these letters transcend language and culture, forming a shared understanding in the world of fine spirits.
